All applications must be received by the deadline of February 15, 2008

Purpose:

The purpose of these scholarships is to support the equine industry by providing educational assistance to outstanding men and women within the Michigan Horse Council and its member organizations.

Eligibility:

Application for these scholarships is open to any individual who is a full or part-time student of a college or university, and who is a current individual or business member of the Michigan Horse Council, Inc. (MHC), or who is a member of an organization that belongs to the MHC. Children of MHC members (as described above) who are 18 years or younger are eligible to apply if they are completing high school and have been accepted to a college or university.  If a person is not a member when s/he applies, s/he  can include an individual membership application and fee to join the MHC. 

For those who meet the eligibility criteria above, the scholarships will be available on an equal opportunity basis; the MHC will not discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, religion or physical disability.

Selection of winners:

Applicants will be evaluated according to these criteria:

       Scholastic achievement

bullet

      Duration and extent of involvement with equines and in equine organizations, with emphasis on volunteer activities

bullet

       Potential for success in chosen field of study

bullet

       Potential for contribution to the horse industry

bullet

     Financial need

Applicants will provide:

     Completed official MHC Scholarship Application form.

bullet

     Transcript from last school attended, through Fall 2007, including GPA .

bullet

      A statement of 250 words or less explaining your involvement in the horse industry and your reasons for pursuing your chosen field.

bullet

       3 character reference letters, not from a family member, to include 1 from each of 3 of the following 4 categories: Personal (someone who has known you for 5 years or longer); Scholastic/Academic; Employer; Volunteer/Extra-Curricular.

MHC awards 10 scholarships per year. These include:

 
 
4-H Scholarships:
bullet For Senior division participants at the State 4-H Show we have 2 scholarships in the amount of $500. The winners are selected by randomly drawing 2 names from those of all the senior exhibitors; it is not a competitive award. You are entered in the drawing when you enter the show.
 
 
Michigan State University Scholarships:
bullet  1  scholarship in the amount of $1,500 for a student enrolled in the Horse Management program at MSU's Institute of Agricultural Technology.
bullet   1 scholarship in the amount of $2,000 for a student pursuing a Bachelor's degree with an equine emphasis.
bullet   1 scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to a student pursuing a DVM with and intent to practice equine medicine in Michigan.

Michigan Horse Council Member Scholarships:
bullet MHC offers 3 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to students who are members of the Michigan Horse Council or a MHC member organizations. These awards are not limited to students pursuing equine fields of study, and selection of the winners is made in February
   
Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Assn:
bullet Two $ 500 each scholarships will be presented to Seniors in the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association. For additional information see www.miha.org
