See What Michigan Horse Council Youth Strives For...
Upcoming Youth Meetings
GET A LEG UP! Join the Conversation with the Michigan Horse Council’s Youth Membership.
Our Youth membership is designed to connect you to all things equine, with the right people, places and opportunities that best suit your gifts, goals and dreams.
Even if you’ve already begun your journey in horsemanship, we know, there’s always more to learn and experience. That’s why we’re going to provide you with a “trail map” of some of the people who have already been in that “rodeo!” (Not necessarily a real rodeo..it’s just a figure of speech).
Our hope is that you will find insight, encouragement and understand, there’s a place for you here.
So, what are these “trail maps” going to be about?
Here’s what the guide says;
Trail 1 – A picture is worth a thousand words- Trail guide: Paula Stevens Trail 2 – A quarter of a horse is an amazing thing-Trail guide: Sasha Glover
Trail 3 – All the way to Oklahoma-Trail guide: Kaitlyn Howe
Trail 4- The ride to the show-Trail guide: Audrey Barnes
Then what? You get to submit questions via our website to the trail guides!
We hope you find these trail maps helpful.
We’ll also be posting upcoming opportunities with; 4H groups, Shows, Camps, Competitions, and don’t forget volunteer opportunities (those are free)!

MHC New Youth Committee Chair - Julie Vruggink
Julie Vruggink is the Program Manager at Lansing School Districts’ Equine Center for Learning at Beekman, (formerly known as Beekman Therapeutic Riding Center).
Julie is married, has two sons and lives in DeWitt, Michigan.
Prior to her work at Beekman, she was a Learning and Education Specialist and a Human Resources Manager for 25 years.
Her experience with horses began as a child on a Morgan horse farm. The owners of the farm allowed her to groom and ride their prize show horses, which is where her heart became attached.
Julie began volunteering at Beekman, as a groom and lesson lead in 2001. Returning in 2019 as Program Manager.
Julie’s profound love of horses and kids has built a drive in her, to connect the two beings. Equine assisted Learning and Therapy are at the heart of her work, as well as creating opportunities for youth who do not have access to ride or interact with horses, much like her own experience.
Julie is also a certified trainer with Partners in Leadership and is building programs at ECL, for preschoolers through high school, utilizing the herd of miniature and full-size horses.
Julie also enjoys spending time with her family, trail riding with her horse, Cheyenne, gardening and cooking.
Julie hopes to serve the Michigan Horse Council and the “equine family” well, during her appointment as youth chair.
